10 Things To Know About The JAMB Cut Off Mark

JAMB recently announced the minimum acceptable score which is popularly called cut off mark for the JAMB UTME 2024. The minimum benchmark (cut off) for admissions for tertiary institutions is 140 for Universities, 100 for Polytechnics and colleges of education.

Many students are confused on how they will make use of this cut off mark to process their admission. Some students who scored low mark like 150 or 160 are already that they can now apply for any University of their choice, which is not so.

So, I will be explaining to you 10 Things To Know About The JAMB Cut Off Mark and how you can use it for admission.

1. The marks set by JAMB are called the minimum tolerable score (cut-off). This score was arrived at the policy meeting when they discussed about it. It is based on the aggrement of all institutions that it should be the minimum score. It is just the benchmark to use. NO SCHOOL IS ALLOWED TO GO BEYOND THE MINIMUM SCORE SET, BUT THEY CAN GO ABOVE IT. Which means, Universities can’t use their cut off mark below 140, likewise Polytechnics and Colleges of Education are not allowed to go below 100 mark.

2. This cut off mark is not the same as the Post-UTME/ Admission cut-off marks of each institutions. Each schools (Institutions) will still set their own cut-off marks which is the least score you should have to qualify for the Post UTME / Screening of their respective schools.

3. Most Federal Universities and even polytechnics ands some state owned schools that are mostly competitive schools will likely set their admission cut-off marks far above the minimum JAMB cut-off mark of 140. Universities like UNILAG, University of Ibadan (UI) etc. do have a high number of applicants and do set their cut-off marks at 200 or above.

4. Some Universities and Polytechnics do have general cut off mark but specific mark for a few coures. For example, a Univesity can say that LAW, Medicine and Surgery is 250 and above, Nursing to be 230 and above, Economics and Mass Communication to be 200 and above while other courses at 180 and above. This kind of school used as example used 180 as cut off for all courses but some courses need high score to be eligible to apply.

5. Some insitutions do have departmental cut off mark, otherwise known as cut off mark for each course, they will categorically announce the cut off mark they need for each of their courses.

6. This does not mean that some universities will not set their cut-off marks at 140. Some of them will surely set their cut-off marks at 140. And some polytechnics will also set as 100.

7. In all of these, each of these schools will announce their cut off mark when they announced the sales of Post UTME / Screening Form for admission.

8. Now, if JAMB score is not upto the requirement the school you want required, you should proceed to change to another school or course that has a lower admission cut-off mark so you can stand a chance of securing admission. DON’T SAY YOU WILL TRY, IT CAN NOT WORK. IT IS A PROGRAMMED THING, ONCE YOUR MARK DOES NOT FIT IN THEIR REQUIREMENTS, YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED. So if the school you initially chose has a high cut-off mark, you are advised to equally change your institution to one that can accept a low JAMB score.

9. Take note that JAMB UTME score is not the only determinant of getting admission. Other parameters are Post-UTME exam score (if the school will do exam), screening grade, O’level result grade and others as needed by the school.

10. Lastly, dont just relax if you have a high score and you believe you will get admission, if the school will need you to do post utme exam, you should start preparing for it, just as you did for JAMB.
